Buying a used ute without a professional inspection can result in expensive repairs after purchase. CMM Automotive recently completed a Mobile Pre Purchase Vehicle check
on a 2006 Nissan Navara on Russell Street, Morley. Our used catr report uncovered several mechanical, safety and cosmetic faults that every prospective buyer should carefully consider before purchasing the vehicle.
Interior Inspection
We began the inspection by inspecting the vehicle’s interior. We found the centre trim surrounding the radio and ventilation controls was loose and not secured correctly. Several retaining clips had broken. All door trims showed heavy scuff marks from regular use. The interior light did not operate, and the gear shift knob was loose. We also tested the radio. Although the unit powered up correctly, no sound came through the speakers.
Engine Inspection
Next, we inspected the engine bay and its components. The battery bracket appeared to have been replaced recently. However, the driver’s side fan belt showed signs of age and wear. We also found corrosion on the exhaust system, with metal fatigue visible around the exhaust ribs. The muffler had broken, and someone had fitted a straight pipe in its place. In addition, the engine was leaking oil from the rear main seal. We also found the left-hand rear shackle bushes had split and require replacement.
Steering, Brakes and Suspension
Our inspection identified a worn front steering arm with excessive free play. We also found excessive play in the front wheel bearings. The front sway bar link bushes had started splitting, while the front brake pads had worn out. The rear leaf springs showed significant surface rust. In addition, the rear brake shoes and brake drums were heavily worn and contained deep grooves. We also found the rear differential was extremely worn and showed signs of locking internally.
Body and Exterior Inspection
We completed the secondhand car inspection by inspecting the body and exterior. The fuel flap would not open correctly, making refuelling difficult. We also found the keys did not operate all locks as intended, which should be investigated before purchase.
Road Test
During the road test, the clutch engaged very high in the pedal travel, indicating clutch wear. We also heard excessive differential noise and gearbox whining while driving. In addition, the worn steering arm created noticeable steering free play.
