When testing the air conditioning system, we found extremely low pressure on the low side. This reading indicated a possible restriction in the refrigerant flow. We carried out further testing before replacing any components.
Faulty TX Valve Found
The testing eventually traced the problem to a faulty TX valve (thermal expansion valve). The TX valve controls the amount of refrigerant entering the evaporator. When the TX valve becomes restricted, the low-side pressure can drop significantly. The evaporator may then receive insufficient refrigerant to cool the vehicle properly
On this Mazda BT-50, the unusually low suction pressure was an important clue that helped identify the restriction.
After diagnosing the faulty TX valve, we carried out the correct repair instead of simply regassing the system and hoping the problem disappeared.
