A pre purchase vehicle inspection can uncover problems that may not be obvious when you first look at a used vehicle. CMM Automotive recently inspected a 2007 Chrysler Crossfire in Craigieburn, where we found several issues that a potential buyer should consider before purchasing the vehicle.
While the Chrysler Crossfire presented reasonably at first glance, our inspection identified concerns with the tyres, steering, engine and general maintenance condition.
Chrysler Crossfire Interior Inspection
We started our used vehicle inspection inside the Chrysler Crossfire.
The passenger-side interior light was very dull, and some of the windscreen washer jets appeared to be blocked. We also found no water in the windscreen washer reservoir.
We were unable to locate the vehicle’s logbook during the inspection. A missing logbook does not necessarily mean that a vehicle has not been maintained. However, service records can provide valuable information about previous maintenance and repairs.
The trip meter also could not be set during our road test.
Engine Bay Inspection Found an Oil Leak
Our inspection of the engine bay identified several items requiring attention.
The battery tested low, while the condition of the engine coolant was only average. These findings may indicate that some general maintenance will be required.
More importantly, we found an engine oil leak around the rocker cover at the top of the engine.
Oil leaks can range from relatively straightforward repairs to more significant problems. Identifying the location of the leak before buying the vehicle gives the potential buyer an opportunity to investigate likely repair costs.
Tyres and Steering Required Attention
The steering, suspension, brakes and tyres revealed some of the most important findings during this vehicle inspection.
The steering damper was leaking oil and requires attention. We also noticed graze marks around the control arms.
Both front tyres were bald and required replacement.
The rear tyres were also in poor condition. They were lumpy and had several cuts and slashes through the tyre tread. Tyre condition is particularly important because it directly affects the vehicle’s handling, braking and overall safety.
We estimated the front brakes had approximately 50% remaining.
There were also scuff marks on the wheel rims.
Exterior and Body Inspection
During our inspection of the Chrysler’s body and exterior components, we found cloudy headlight lenses.
Cloudy headlights can reduce the amount of useful light reaching the road at night. Depending on their condition, the lenses may require restoration or replacement.
We also found that the Chrysler Crossfire did not have a spare tyre.
Road Test Revealed Poor Ride Quality
A road test is an important part of a pre purchase car inspection because some problems only become apparent once the vehicle is moving.
During the Chrysler Crossfire road test, we noticed driveline-type noise that appeared to be coming from the tyres.
The vehicle’s overall ride and comfort were also poor due to the condition of the tyres. Considering the bald front tyres and damaged, lumpy rear tyres found during the physical inspection, tyre replacement would be an important priority.
