An oil weep doesn’t necessarily mean a major failure is occurring, but identifying the source allows the buyer to investigate the issue further and consider any repair that may be required.

We also found an additional oil weep around the turbo inlet cover.

Engine Oil Weeps

The turbo wasn’t the only area showing signs of engine oil.

Inspection also found a slight oil weep around the sump plug area.

The engine oil level sensor area also showed signs that warranted attention.

Small oil weeps can sometimes remain relatively minor for extended periods. However, they should still be documented during a pre-purchase inspection.

Further inspection can determine the severity and whether repairs are required.

Front Tyres Worn Out

Both front tyres were low on tread and considered worn out.

Tyres are one of the most important wear items to assess when inspecting a used vehicle.

Replacing two tyres immediately after purchasing a car represents an additional expense for the buyer. Their condition can also affect grip, braking and wet-weather performance.

Checking tyre wear before purchase therefore provides both safety and financial information.

Front Brake and Disc Condition

The front brake pads had approximately 70% remaining.

While the brake pads still had useful life remaining, inspection of the right-hand front brake disc identified a significant lip around the disc.

Brake pad thickness is only one part of assessing a braking system.

Disc condition also matters, which is why inspecting the braking components rather than simply estimating pad life provides a better picture of their overall condition.

Volkswagen Body and Roof Damage

Inspection of the body identified damage around the roof seal area.

We also found small dents in the roof above the left-hand rear door.

Body damage can range from minor cosmetic imperfections to evidence that warrants further investigation.

Documenting visible damage allows the buyer to consider the vehicle’s cosmetic condition alongside its mechanical condition.

Whining Noise During the Road Test

One of the more interesting findings appeared once we road tested the Volkswagen.

We could hear a whining noise coming from the rear of the vehicle.

A rear whining noise can have several possible causes. Without further diagnosis, it would be inappropriate to assume which component was responsible.

Instead, the inspection recorded the noise so the potential buyer knew that further investigation may be required.
